J-pop short form for Japanese pop can be traced back to as far as the the Shōwa period when jazz was at its lower peaks.Until they turned it up a notch.
When jazz was reintroduced with a wide selection of instuments, instead of only classical ones ,people reacted to the new way of music. No longer was it dull and it gave a new sense of fun into an average life.
They then called this "Ongaku Kissa"(おんがく きっさ) which was a " popular venue for live jazz". ,,,
Flash back to World War II with the Imperial army of Japan. Due to the amount of stress and pressure they felt, they decided to hold off on the jazz for awhile. But you can only put off something for so long before a new item is introduced. When the war had ended soldiers from the U.S. still remained there. In the “Far east Network” New types of music were beginning to prove themselves as worthy enough to listen to. The Japanese were soon hooked on it . The new popular music was Country. Some examples of the genres were “ Boogie-Woogie , Blues, Mambo, Waltz” Etc. Many Japanese artists started to make there own versions of songs they knew which lead to the interest of other performers from The U.S and other regions. Soon Country artists had flocked to perform there. Due to how easy country was to play and learn “ 1952 ,The Year of the Jazz Boom” was over. The new era of country had begun. ,,,,
Rock and roll : 1956 - 1959
As country music began to became a hit it ended soon after words when a group called “Kosaka Kazuya and the Wagon Masters” surfaced there cover of Elvis Presley’s Heartbreak hotel. It being such a hit at the time made every new performer want to try it out. In 1956 a movie was even created which had a number of rock and roll performances in it. But just as it became popular in Japan the craze ended in the U.S which left struggling musicians at the time left with little to no influences to follow. Many artists tried to merge the rock with traditional pop as well , but this wasn’t very popular .Others began to re-cover American songs ( this was called cover pop ) but just as well it wasn’t going anywhere.
70’s and 80’s :
During this time period music started to shift from simple arrangements, into more complex ones. This was known as New music. And most new music was based on love and personal situations apart from “social messages” or views. More into the 80’s music that had became popular was known as “City Pop”. Soon to make sense of both the terms City pop and new music they formed the word for both which we are lead to know as J-pop.
